 CCAYH 2022 Award Nominations


As part of this year’s CCAYH 2022, we aim to recognize outstanding leaders in the field of adolescent and youth health. We invite nominations for the: 

  1. CCAYH Legacy Award: recognizing a long-standing champion in Caribbean Adolescent and Youth Health. 

  2. CCAYH Youth Award; recognizing an emerging youth advocate who has demonstrated a consistent passion, fervor and participation in matters related to the health and wellbeing of Caribbean adolescents and youth; or has been outstanding in developing innovation or carried out significant research in the field of adolescent health.

The recipients of the 2022 Awards were Abril Vargas and Dr. Sheila Campbell Forrester.

Dr. Sheila Campbell-Forrester

CCAYH Legacy Award

This award was presented to Dr. Sheila Campbell-Forrester who has over 40 years of experience in adolescent health in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. As one of the first physicians to dedicate her practice to adolescents and young adults, she successfully advocated for the inclusion of this population in Jamaica’s national health agenda. Dr. Campbell-Forrester was the founding Caribbean Vice-President of the International Association for Adolescent Health, a role that she filled for many years, keeping the Caribbean region in the global dialogue of the field. She also served as the president of the Caribbean Association for Adolescent health.


Abril Vargas

CCAYH Youth Award

The 2022 CCAYH Youth Award was presented to Abril Vargas, a 23 year old youth activist from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Abril is a student of social work and aspires to focus on research that contributes to the development and understanding of vulnerable groups and for correct intervention approaches with these groups. Abril is a United National Volunteer engaged in front line activism. As a trans masculine, neurodivergent, black and neighborhood person, Abril considers that they have a unique perspective that can contribute greatly to overall advocacy in these spaces, particularly amongst adolescents and young people.
